Woops, and the day had been going so well. Just thought I would have a little nap in the afternoon as I had done everything I had put on my list to achieve in the morning and thought a little rest would take me through the evening work section of the day.

Something went a little bit awry with my 20 minute power nap which turned into a 2 hour snooze fest, and I had completely forgotten about the chicken stock I had lightly simmering on the stove. My bed is a long way from the kitchen due to our flat resembling a long  thin corridor, so I did not notice the smell until just before I opened the kitchen door, where I was welcomed by a kitchen of thick grey smoke. I could not see past my nose. The kitchen has a heat alarm, not a smoke alarm so it does not go off every time you burn the toast, so no alarms had gone off. Oh no! I tried to get the pan off the hob and take it into the garden. It was stuck to the hob, I tugged and tugged , finally got it off raced into the garden with it…opened every door and waited in the garden for the smog to clear.

Forgot to turn the hob off and when yanking the stuck cast iron pan off the hob the glass top cracked!  So everything smells of burn and my best cast iron pan and the top of the very old cooker are completely mashed. Ah well. The curtains got washed and the place got cleaned, no more creative work was done…I sense the lingering smell of burn will haunt the place for a while yet.

SONG OF THE DAY- Forever Young – Bob Dylan

The words are lovely…I always think of forever young meaning…not looking young , but feeling young in your heart.

We lost Steve Jobs today – he died, one of the most inspirational men on the planet. His legacy is vast but he will be remembered for his is his passion, creativity,  and  courage to walk his own path. My heart goes out to  his family. It’s well worth watching  Steve Job’s Speech at Stamford University if you can find 15 minutes in your busy life to check it out. If you have no time start at 5′.51” on his section about ‘love and loss’. Then at 8’12” he hits the absolute truth,  ‘don’t lose faith – you have got to find what you love – and that is true for work, as it is for your lovers – do what you believe is great work -love what you do..if you haven’t found it yet, keep looking…don’t settle’

And as I type this on my apple computer, which revolutionised my creative work ( I am an apple) – I am reminded how short life is and how all the money in the world won’t help you  find what you  love (unless it is having lots of money) or save you from dying before your path is truly trodden,  that  there are no excuses to be made. We have to make the most of every moment we have….NOW! Find out what you really love…what really moves you…grab life by the short and curlies….it is never too late. And if you already have found it…..Love it some more.

Keep Looking – Don’t Settle. x x x x x x x

SONG OF THE DAY – Bob Dylan – Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright

One of my favourite Dylan tracks. Dedicated to Steve Jobs who was a big Dylan fan.

Today is the day of the year when we are mean to  celebrate and give thanks for all the amazing teachers on the planet because it is World Teachers’ Day.’ Since 1994 World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated on this day’‘ and it is the first I have ever heard of it and I have been a ‘qualified’ teacher since 1993. ‘It is an opportunity for UNESCO and Education International to celebrate the profession and to promote international standards for the teaching profession.’ Well blow me down with a feather, and there we were just 2 days ago thinking we should start hugging every teacher we met, and there it is …we have a special day …..and I did not even know!

Perhaps it would be fitting to make World Teachers Day the day when people who think teachers have way too much time off, could come in and ‘be a teacher for a day’, and let the teachers have ( you guessed it) another day off! ha ha …imagine how that would go down with the Daily Mail set, I can see the disgruntled headlines now. I read a very funny thing when I googled  the ‘Daily Mail and teachers’. It seems that teachers are responsible for many of the world’s ills and for the fact that Andy Murray lost Wimbledon…seriously ….here’s the link! it’s very funny.

I also think it is important to recognise that we all have the facility to ‘teach’, learn and share just like we all have the facility to ‘parent’.  Happy World Teachers Day!

SONG OF THE DAYManu Chau – Me Gustas tu

We got this album a few years ago… it’s all good.

No no no please…I surrender! …. ‘Just Another Manic Bun Day’ was really the headline in this article about today’s festival in Sweden, that celebrates one of those  things so Swedish, ( drum roll please) the Cinnamon bun (news to me).  It is a fairly new festival and  frankly seems to be a bit of a marketing ploy for the  home bun makers. I cannot really get a jist of what happens on this day,  possibly everyone just tugs their forelocks to the baker while helping themselves to another cinnamon bun, which seems ok for the Swedes,  who even have  a day called ‘Fat Tuesday’ – which, in all fairness is the day you traditionally  use up all your fat before wandering into the desert to be with Lent  for 40 days, with not so much as a bun to keep you company. I thought to compare Bun Day with Anzak Day in Australia  and New Zealand which, as far as I was aware, was when everyone just tucks into plentiful supplies of Anzak buscuit…but there is, as I discover more to the day, commemorating all those who died and served in military operations for their countries. The Antipodean extension tocthe Easter Egg…just another excuse to eat confectionary in the name of something more profound.

It has been claimed  that the  biscuits of that name,(which includes as its ingredients  – oats, dessicated coconut, syrup) were sent by wives to soldiers abroad because the ingredients did not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. Today, Anzac biscuits are manufactured commercially for retail sale.

Back to the Cinnamon Buns, I have to say, there are many more things I think of as being more inherently Swedish, like the pickled herring, the Saab, the gravlax,  the blonde hair, the meatball, and a big yellow and blue logo. Ah well….good for them…All hail to the bun! The cinnamon bun! (which I would have been tempted to call a Danish Pastry)…and if I was not gluten intolerant I would probably join you.

A more redeeming festival happens  today, in Mozambique. Day of Peace and Reconciliation.   I continue to be amazed and in awe of the people in this world who forgive their  enemies and captors – Nelson Mandela being a shining beacon for me. It is always easier to forgive people if they are sorry. But if they are not…then how can you start? I suppose you then forgive someone for being so messed up, that they cannot see the way they behave is cruel and hurtful. Still very difficult, that’s why we have Saints I suppose. Here’s to the to-martrys. (We have a school near us called Thomas the Martyr, which gets called Thomas the Tomato)!

SONG OF THE DAY –  The Bangles – Manic Monday

Oh well …it had to happen really. It is in my head now ‘manic bun day’ ha ha. Did you know it was written by Prince? Neither did I.
